How do you balance purpose and profit in Asia when the need to restart economic growth is so urgent?

Globally, momentum is building to better align finance with our sustainable development needs. In Asia, impact investment is on the rise and governments are increasingly putting in place frameworks to enable the finance sector to contribute more systematically to the transition to a more resilient and sustainable economy. However, despite gaining significant traction as an economic hotspot in the past decade, impact investing remains a young concept in Asia and the region is lagging in turning economic growth into social good, and in finding the right balance between purpose and profit.

Join Durreen Shahnaz, Founder and CEO of Singapore-based Impact Investment Exchange (IIX), Emily Chew, Global Head of Sustainability for Investment Management and Chair of the Sustainable Investing Council at Morgan Stanley, Catia Davim, Partner - Enterprise Transformation at KPMG Australia, and Stefen Shin, Principal Investment Officer at the Investment Operation Department at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for a discussion on the state of impact investing and sustainable finance in Asia.

This discussion will be the fifth in a live webcast series exploring the Sustainability Edition of Asia Society Australia’s Disruptive Asia project, a major thought-leadership initiative that looks at how Asia’s rise is impacting Australia’s foreign policy, economy and society and how Australia should respond. In 2020, we ask if Asia’s rise is sustainable – environmentally, economically and socially?

Disruptive Asia is a thought-leadership project by Asia Society Australia launched in 2017. It presents – through long-form essays – new perspectives and policy recommendations on how Asia’s rise is impacting Australia’s foreign policy, economy and society and how Australia should respond. Disruptive Asia deliberately looks at both external aspects of Australia’s relationship with Asia (foreign policy, business connectivity, international education) and their domestic implications and manifestations (community relations, leadership diversity, education settings and capabilities).
