Cultural Diplomacy: the Tradition of Diwali Transcending a Nation

What and how do we define cultural heritage? How do regional and nuanced stories compete against globalisation? How is cultural change reflected in art and can exporting traditions facilitate and conversely hinder international relations?

Most of Indian cultural diffusion to overseas audiences has occurred without the involvement of the Indian government. Instead, Indian mythology, art, and traditions have been globalized through the nation’s vibrant diaspora and cultural diplomacy. But as culture moves across borders, it adapts to different settings and evolves over time.

In celebration of Diwali, a tradition that has transcended a nation and culture and is now celebrated worldwide, join Asia Society Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales for a discussion on inclusion, digital access, the idea of heritage in diasporic communities, and the role of art in the spread of culture.

This event is presented in partnership with the Art Gallery of New South Wales and VisAsia Council. This event is open to the public and registration is essential. For further enquiries contact: [email protected]
